We’ve arrived at Memorial Day 2020, yet most people’s minds aren’t on the fun summer season, but instead on the safety and well being of their families as we deal with the COVID-19 crisis.
Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, most of us will likely forgo the celebrations over the three-day-weekend, as we’re preoccupied with our health and that of our loved ones. We’re also pondering what the near future is going to look like, and when our work and home schedules will get back to normal. It’s an unsettling time for our country, to say the least.
Still, I think we all know that we can, and will, recover and come back a stronger and a better United States. With this in mind, it’s also a good time to reflect on our great country and what Memorial Day is meant to represent.
Let’s not forget that Memorial Day, a federal holiday, is the official honoring of military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. In other words, we remember those who gave their lives for this country.
During this time, it has become customary for me to reflect on my own special privilege in being an American; I feel that blessing now more than ever.
I was not born here in the United States, but I have adopted this land as my home. I am a proud American citizen who’s very involved in community, civic and spiritual life. I remember to acknowledge and express gratitude to those in uniform who protect our values and our freedoms. That is why I have helped feed nurses Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center and support Los Angeles County Firefighters.
I never forget that we’re all living the lives we choose because of the freedom fought and maintained by our U.S. military. Again this year, in respect and appreciation for our military forces, our Bliss Car Washes will offer every member of the armed services, former and current, a free car wash on Memorial Day.
Each year on Memorial Day, a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. At this time, rest assured, I’ll be thinking of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. I hope, in your own way, you’ll remember to pay some respect, as well.
